• (On the use of piano) "The beginnings of that were in playing 'Dinu Lipatti's Bones' on The Sunset Tree - I hadn't really known that my brief childhood study of piano had left any traces but I felt like I "went somewhere" there. Did a little on Get Lonely and more on some EPs, and just felt connected to the piano when it came time to write TLOTWTC - I think I was in a really emotionally vulnerable place when I wrote that record, and playing piano really opens up pathways for me to the deeper, truer place. That sound corny I know but it is true, when I play piano esp. by myself it's like I can get down into the mud in a hurry." -- John's AMA
