Lyrics[]

Insane in a studio in Los Angeles
Rudderless and hungry and high
Ideas of no earthly consequence
Float across my consciousness
And then go dark
As bullseyes

Go down the devil's way
Go down a twenty devil way

Twenty years on they'll be asking what I remember
Go where the dry dust crawlers tread
The fire in the vocal booth
The doctor who filed down my teeth
Dreams from the ether overhead

Go down the devil's way
Go down a twenty devil way

Lit candles pressed into the walls down there
Three cans of Aqua Net in my greying hair

Arsenic drifting down through the hourglass
Track-lit hallways that go on for days
Floating like a Portuguese man o' war
Pretty hardcore
Fire offerings, burnt offerings
Thanks and praise

Go down the devil's way
Go down the devil's way
Go down the devil's way
Go down a twenty devil way

Comments by John Darnielle About this Song[]

  • “It’s about Ozzy Osbourne. He is the singer in Black Sabbath. He’s from Birmingham, England. He went to jail a number of times when he was a young man because he couldn’t stay out of trouble, he had poor impulse control. His father was not wealthy but he thought, well, my son likes rock music, I’ll buy him a PA and put it in an outbuilding and then he can make music out there with his friends and maybe stay out of trouble. So he would invite people over and they’d say, ‘Well you know, you’re the kind of guy who goes to jail for stuff, I don’t know if I want to come over—‘ ‘But I have a PA!’ He joined a band called the Polka Tulk Blues Band. They weren’t as big as Black Sabbath. And they toured a lot, people go pretty, touring is hard on your mind especially if you already have problems with your mind, and by the mid-80s he was completely over the bend and he has stretches of time he can’t account for. I relate to this. This song shares a title with an Ozzy song, it’s called No More Tears.” -- 2018-05-28 - Old Town School of Folk Music - Chicago, IL
  • "In this song, a man who was once a young man from Birmingham, England who now lives in Los Angeles goes out to his garage... Starts looking through old videotapes. He is alone in between tours. He has a lot of money and a lot of time on his hands. He's supposed to do stuff that keeps him from using more drugs. So in this song he's digging through the old tapes and he finds a -- in the age of the rock video they would send you one to audit. A single song and the video on it. Strange waste of plastic. And he finds one and he throws it in and he doesn't remember having shot the video at all.... This song stars Ozzy Osbourne and it's called 'No More Tears'." -- 2019-11-15 - O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire - London, England
