Lyrics[]

Champagne bubbled up through the neck of the bottle
And sweet sounds came out through the radio
It was John Coltrane
God damn it, I love John Coltrane

You danced across the living room floor
And you kissed me once and then you kissed me some more
You had your arms around my neck and it felt real fine
And then your ankle knocked up against mine
And resonating in my bones
The precise, crisp drumming of Mr. Elvin Jones
God damn it, I love John Coltrane

Comments by John Darnielle About this Song[]

  • "Right, there's somebody yelling for this song, not at the moment, but there has been...the only way you can know this song is if you have bootlegs. It's an old, old song, of the type that I stopped writing because I was showing up at the open-mic night at Pitzer where I went to college, and, I would show up, and I had these songs that were kind of funny, and then one night I was playing, and I heard somebody say 'Oh, it's that guy! He plays really funny songs!' You don't wanna be the guy who plays the funny songs, right? You don't wanna be that guy. It's okay to write funny songs, but once people say 'Oh yeah, he's funny!', that's when it's time to write about, you know, people getting ugly divorces. This, however, is a song about raw animal sex. -- 2002-10-23 - Bottom of the Hill - San Francisco, CA
