In the Cane Fields is an unreleased song by the Mountain Goats.
Lyrics[]
I tasted the wet sugar on your lips And it brought me alive Songs blended unsurely One another on the arms of the air We looked around the living room There was cool jazz on the stereo The sound was clean and clear I was ready to absorb you into myself My jaw was hanging open I got so hungry and I felt so drunk I felt your muscles tighten and relax And tighten and relax And tighten and relax And tighten And then relax I knew a Cuban guy who worked cutting cane when he was young, can you imagine it He said that the tension that it bred in his back was enough to make you laugh Bending and rising sixteen hours a day We looked around the living room Your sweating skin pressed on me and we were drowning And I don't wanna hurt you anymore
Comments by John Darnielle About this Song[]
- "I found a super old one that like in my mind I have played it a million billion times, but setlist dot fm, which is what I consult for this stuff, says that I haven't played it in ten years, and that was on a lark, right. Um, to me, I feel like this was one of the first four or five songs that got, that was put on a tape that said 'The Mountain Goats' on it, right, uh, when I was living in a room in Norwalk, California working as a psychiatric nurse and coming home at 11:15 PM and, uh, and, and staying up until like three trying to teach myself to play guitar. I'd taken the poems, I was writing poetry before that, and figure out how to play a C7, there it is.... I was sitting there tryin' real hard and then when I would finally get a progression down, I would look through the poems and say, that was all right, see what happens. This is one of those." -- 2019-09-05 - Neumo's - Seattle, WA
