I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is the ninth song on The Mountain Goats' first cassette, Taboo VI: The Homecoming. It is a cover of the song by Hank Williams. Solomon Revisited was originally supposed to be the closing song, however, Dennis Callaci liked "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" so much he decided to include it on the tape.

Lyrics[]

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly.
The midnight train is riding low.
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

I've never seen a night so long,
when time goes crawling by.
the moon just went behind the clouds
to hide its face and die.

did you ever see a robin weep
when leaves begin to die?
that means he's lost the will to live.
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

the sign has come, a falling star.
like love, a purple sky.
they'll never wonder where you are.
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

I'm so lonesome I could cry.

Notes[]

  • The woman dubbing the song in Spanish was John's girlfriend at the time.
