Lyrics[]

You were all were dressed in green
Clouds bounced against the edges of the sky
You had the prettiest hair I'd ever seen
We saw the world passing by

There was an ocean's droning
Though we were nowhere near the shore
We heard each other giggling and moaning
Then we couldn't hear each other any more yeah

When my head was resting on your breastbone
I could hear your beating heart
24 hours later you had left me completely alone
I heard the whole world come apart

And you were all dressed in green
Rising in the sky was an unfamiliar star
You know, you know what I mean
Yeah I remember who you are

Comments by John Darnielle About this Song[]

  • "I combed through the catalog trying to pick the ones that, that I remember as moments where something sort of got a little better, got a little easier to do. This is not the first song where I climbed up the neck, what I remembered about it was, um, uh, there was a guy in the audience the first time I played it named Peter Hughes.... We were in our little scene down there in Pomona and Claremont and Upland, we, we went to each other's shows. That was the main activity for a couple summers, and when this happens in your scene, it's a blessed time.... And it's cool when this happens, when you become a little hermetic scene. And, uh, and we were all making friends, hadn't known any of these people a year before and, uh, and I would go see a Diskothi-Q show and he would have a new song and I'd go 'oh my god, that's the fuckin' best song, dude' and, uh, and he would watch and he would go 'What was that new one? What was the one in A?' And, uh, and it was this one. And he said 'ah, that one was good.' It was a more patient song. It was on the second tape." -- 2020-02-22 - Swedish American Hall - San Francisco, CA
